Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) is an essential herb to any herbal kit. Native to Europe, parts of Asia, and North Africa, this soothing perennial plant was named after the Greek word altho, meaning “to cure.”
Marshmallow is a sweet, cooling herb used to soothe and moisten many tissues in the human body. It contains polysaccharides (sugars) that form a gooey layer of protection when water is added. Traditionally, tea was used for a dry cough to soothe irritated mouths and throats. It may even help prevent coughs. Consider trying marshmallow root tea for mild stomach and gut discomfort. It can be supportive when dealing with mild heartburn, stomach upset, and gastrointestinal irritation. Additionally, marshmallow’s coating action supports a healthy gut lining. It may also be helpful with bladder irritation.
This herb is generally well-tolerated with no known side effects. It’s best taken as a tea or capsule for its soothing demulcent effects though it is also available as a tincture. The powdered herb can also be added to oatmeal or other hot cereals.
Consult with a health professional before adding anything new to your lifestyle. See your doctor right away if you are experiencing irritated tissues in any system, and symptoms don’t improve in a few days.
