Cervical Health Awareness

It’s the start of a new year, we reflect on the past while looking forward to positive life changes we hope to implement. We can feel a collective urge to begin again with a newfound motivation. Which begs the question, what if we devoted this year to taking care of ourselves?

A key pillar in women’s health is regular Pap smear exams. For most people this isn’t your idea of a good time, but it can save your life. We’ve been told time and time again that the benefits outweigh the brief period of discomfort they cause, but it can still be hard to get jazzed about them. We think about the inconvenience, taking time off work, and the anxiety of awaiting test results. Let’s put some of those thoughts to rest and talk about how the Pap Smears work FOR us!

Fun Fact: The Pap test, or Pap smear, is so named in honor of its inventor, a Greek doctor called George (Georgios) Nicholas Papanicolaou (1883–1962). His work focused on examining smears of cervical tissue to screen for potential warning signs related to gynecological health.

When the Pap Smear is performed a sample of cells is collected from the cervix. This sample is used to screen for HPV, detect cervical cancer, and monitor changes in the cervical cells. In addition, the test can also help spot any other issues that may appear in the cervical or vaginal area, such as infections. There are several types of treatment and intervention available for cervical cancer, but for these to be most effective, it is crucial to spot it as early as possible. This is why getting smear tests as advised is so important.
